5 Fun Activities To Do With Your 18 – 24 Months Old

18 to 24 months-olds are a lot of fun to be with. They’re more alert than babies and charge with wide-eyed curiosity to learn more about the environment that they live in. Don’t waste time letting your television babysit and get up to some engaging activities instead.

Make sure that the toys do not contain electronic parts before freezing!

#1: Surprise Ice Cubes

Select a few small toys without electronic components and place them into an empty ice tray. Fill it up with water and a few drops of food colouring to darken the water before placing it into the freezer. Repeat with different toys and colours.

Let your toddler figure out how to melt the ice cubes and be surprised when they discover the hidden toy. It’s best to attempt this activity in the bathroom for easy cleanup. You can also teach them about colour combinations when the ice cubes melt and coloured water mixes.

Ice provides an endless discovery of exploration for inquisitive toddlers!

#2: Ice Painting
Painting on the ice, rather than on paper, can be a new experience for toddlers. Place some ice cubes on a large tray and let your toddler paint over the ice cubes. You can also try creating ice blocks by freezing water in a large container. Large ice blocks act as a canvas for your toddler to observe how the paint creates patterns on the ice.

Be careful to keep your curious toddler from licking the ice!

#3: Oobleck play

Oobleck is a Non-Newtonian fluid which has intriguing properties as it acts like a liquid when you dip your hands into it but feels solid when you punch or squeeze it. This is one of the simpler Science experiments you can introduce to your toddler as it only requires two ingredients – cornstarch and water.

To make oobleck, mix 1.5 or 2 parts of cornstarch into 1 part of the water in small quantities, stirring constantly. It should feel like slime. You can add in a few drops of food colouring to make coloured slime.

This is a messy sensorial activity, best done on a large mat or wading pool for easy cleanup.

#4: Lid scooping

Save those colourful caps from food pouches and put them into a bowl of water. If you don’t have those, small bottle caps are great too. Get a small net for your toddler to practice scooping. This activity reinforces their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

To make this activity more challenging, direct a fan onto the water to create movement.

Clean sponges provide a sensorial learning opportunity for your toddler.

#5: Squeezy Sponges

This is another simple activity which does not require much preparation. Fill up a basin with water and toss in the sponges. Your toddler will love squeezing water out of the sponges, soaking them and repeating the process.

To make this activity even more interesting, place enough water just for one sponge into a bowl so that the sponge will be able to absorb all the water, leaving the bowl empty. This can be a learning opportunity about absorbency for your toddler. You can also vary the activity by introducing other objects into the water such as cardboard or plastic to introduce the concept of absorption to them.

The above activities do not require a lot of preparation beforehand and are relatively easy to execute. Try them with your toddler someday and let us know your toddler’s reaction in the comments!

1: https://www.pexels.com/photo/close-up-of-pink-indoors-325867/

2: https://www.pexels.com/photo/pregnant-woman-standing-near-white-brown-bassinet-64263/

3: https://www.pexels.com/photo/baby-holding-human-finger-225744/

Toddler Craft Ideas: Convert Toilet Rolls into Toys

Toilet paper rolls are common household items. Instead of throwing them away, use them as craft materials for your toddler! Read on as we put together some simple craft ideas for you to try out with your toddler, and give these toilet rolls a new lease of life.

Toilet paper rolls can be repurposed and given a new life.

  • Maracas

Maracas are percussion instruments created by placing beans, pebbles or similar objects into hollow containers. As both you and your toddler embark on creating your very own maracas, explain that percussion instruments are used to create a rhythm or maintain a beat. Show them some videos of maracas performances to enable them to visualise how maracas look like.

To make your own maracas, first, seal one end of a toilet paper roll with paper and some glue around the sides before placing a handful of green or red beans into the container. Afterwards, seal the other end with paper and glue again, and there you have it! Your very own maracas!

Your toddler can personalise his or her maracas with crayons, embellishments or some paint. When it is all completed, put on some music and shake the maracas along to the beat!

This activity encourages your toddler to express his or her creativity through art and music.

  • Binoculars

Line two toilet paper rolls side by side and secures them together using double-sided tape or glue. You can prepare some stickers for your child to decorate their binoculars with before embarking on a scavenger hunt in the neighbourhood.

Though these paper binoculars don’t have lenses, they aren’t purely just for show. As your toddler stares through the binoculars, it narrows their field of vision and helps them focus on faraway objects.

Consider indulging them in play-pretend by becoming adventurers for an afternoon. Take them outdoors with their handmade binoculars. You can reinforce learning by researching the species of birds and critters spotted along the trip.

Create these cute cardboard monsters with some craft paper and toilet rolls!

  • Cardboard Characters

The materials required for this project are glue (stick glue is great for little hands with a minimal mess), some coloured paper and toilet rolls. Choose a base colour and wrap it around the roll, add some circles for eyes and paper at the top for hair. Your toddler can practise his or her cutting skills whilst grooming the character’s “hair”.

In order to enhance the activity and make it more memorable, model the characters after a storybook that your toddler is familiar. Encourage your toddler to name the characters that he or she has created too!

You won’t be able to tell the time with these watches!

  • Watches

Guide your toddler to snip a toilet paper roll into four pieces width-wise with child-safe scissors before pasting a drawn-on clock face of paper on each of the four loops. Toddlers have small wrists which fit perfectly into toilet paper rolls. Play-pretend watches are excellent for teaching them how to read analogue watches and clocks. Use this opportunity to teach them how to differentiate between the minute and hour hands.

Exclusively reusing recyclable material for craftwork as opposed to buying new materials from the stores not only saves the environment but pushes you and your child to think of alternative uses for everyday objects.

1: https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/10/03/19/30/avocado-1712583_960_720.jpg

2: https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/03/05/21/41/abstract-1239043_960_720.jpg

3: https://pixabay.com/en/peanut-butter-toast-spread-3216228/

1:https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-water-lake-pier-54634/

https://www.pexels.com/photo/balance-body-exercise-female-374101/

https://www.pexels.com/photo/pregnancy-pregnant-motherboard-parenthoof-57529/

Parents in Singapore: Have You Heard of These Confinement Myths?

Postpartum confinement is still very much practised in Singapore. Each ethnic group has their own set of rules for the new mother to adhere to, but all have the same aim – to let the mother recuperate and restore her health.

Some confinement practices are rather outlandish and are not suitable to follow in Singapore due to our weather. We’ve debunked some confinement myths for you.

Maintaining hygiene is equally important during confinement.

  • No showering and/or washing hair during confinement

It is believed that women should avoid touching the water as much as possible during their confinement to prevent “wind” from entering the body.

Fact: With Singapore’s hot and humid climate, it is of utmost importance to take regular baths. Not only does this ensure good hygiene which is essential when handling a newborn baby with a weak immune system, it also helps you feel comfortable and relaxed. In addition, regular baths reduce the risk of skin and wound infections.

  • Consume lots of tonic wine, ginger and traditional herbs to expel excess wind

Such ingredients are said to heat up the body and get rid of wind that is trapped in the new mother’s body.

Fact: Everything that we consume should be taken in moderation. Excessive consumption of these ingredients may bring about an adverse effect on the mother and baby. The properties of Traditional Chinese herbs have yet to be studied in detail and in large quantities, may cause more harm than help. If the mother consumes too much alcohol, it may be secreted in breast milk and be passed onto the baby. Hence, it is better to avoid alcohol during confinement.

It is more important to ensure that you consume a nutritionally balanced meal instead.

Water is necessary to relieve the effects of water retention, even for new mums who are in confinement.

  • Do not drink plain water.

Plain water is said to cause water retention. New mothers should only drink red date and longan tea.

Fact: Water retention is not caused by consuming water. In fact, by drinking water, you’re helping your kidneys expel excess fluids left over from pregnancy and childbirth. Red date and longan tea should not be the only source of fluids.

If you are breastfeeding, you should aim for a minimum of 2 litres of fluids in a day.

  • Keep your entire body covered. Wear long sleeves and long pants. Make sure the fan is directed away from your body.

Exposing your body to the elements causes “wind” to enter your body. Keep warm by wearing long sleeves and pants. .

Fact: It is of utmost importance that your body remains well-ventilated. Wearing long sleeves and long pants without air-conditioning may lead to heat rash or in worse cases, heatstroke.

Getting ample rest is important for the new mother to recuperate during confinement.

  • Lie in bed as much as possible

Avoid strenuous physical activities as overexertion may cause uterine prolapse.

Fact: Allow your body to get ample rest but there is no need to stay in bed all day. Keeping yourself active aids in a quicker recovery.

Uterine prolapse occurs when the pelvic floor muscles are too weak and the uterus slips down the vagina. To prevent uterine prolapse, train your Kegel muscles.

Some confinement traditions are not suitable to be followed, given Singapore’s humid climate. What are other confinement rules and myths that you’ve heard of? Let us know in the comments!

How to Start Baby Led Weaning: Tips from a Mum of 2

Baby Led Weaning (BLW) is a weaning method that encourages babies to self-feed. It may sound messy and scary, but here are some benefits of BLW:

  • Instead of steaming and blending food especially for your baby, you can portion out ingredients for your baby and add seasoning for the adults. You can also eat while baby self-feeds!
  • BLW babies are encouraged to self-feed. By doing so, they get to determine what and how much to consume, rather than being coaxed or forced into finishing their food with traditional spoon feeding. With BLW, parents trust that babies know their own bodies and will stop eating once they are full. It is the basis of regulating their appetite.
  • Babies on traditional weaning are fed soft foods which do not require chewing. For BLW, babies are exposed to a variety of different textures, shapes and tastes. The babies learn how to chew their food before swallowing. This strengthens their jaw muscles as well.

Crinkle cut vegetables for an appealing appearance and make it easier for baby-led weaning babies to hold.

Before attempting BLW, you should ensure that your baby is ready for it. Look out for these signs before starting as safety is of priority:

Once your baby is ready, you can start! BLW does not have to be as messy as people think. For easy cleanups, lay a large picnic mat on the floor below the high chair and use a high chair which is light and easy to hose down (this is popular among mothers).

Babies below the age of one should never be fed honey or nuts due to the risk of botulism and a risk of choking respectively. Other foods with possible allergens include egg and shellfish (crabs, shrimp, clams, lobsters etc).

Baby Led Weaning encourages babies to choose healthier foods.

As a rule of thumb, foods prepared for BLW should be soft enough to squish between your thumb and index finger. Some popular first foods for BLW babies include avocados, banana, steamed carrots and broccoli.

It is best to ensure that food is cut in strips about the length of your index finger for babies to grip easily. If you are offering spherical foods such as grapes or strawberries, cut them lengthwise into quarters to prevent choking.

Prepare about three or four types of food for your baby to explore. Lay the food on the high chair tray or on a placemat and do not intervene in the process by holding the food to your baby’s mouth.

Don’t fret if your baby rejects the food or worry if he or she is not eating much. Milk should still be the main source of nutrients until they turn one year old. As such, it is more for them to explore the foods and be introduced to solid food.

Baby Led Weaning strengthens fine motor coordination by learning how to grasp food and put it into their mouths.

A huge concern for parents when deciding to embark on BLW is that their babies will choke and whether their babies are able to chew food without teeth. To counter this, ensure that you take note of the choking hazards and do not attempt BLW if your baby is not physiologically ready for it.

It may be frightening if your baby gags, but this is entirely normal. When food travels to the back of the throat, a gag reflex occurs and the baby will try to force the food out. It is important to stay calm and not panic when a baby is gagging as it is a normal process.

The important thing is to look out for choking. If a baby is choking, he or she will be unable to breathe, cry, cough or make any noise. Thus, it is essential that the main caregiver is aware of basic infant first aid techniques for choking.

Enjoy the baby led weaning journey with your baby!
